On the Boards   /   Kauai Plantation Home

This renovated vacation home at the base of the Kahiliwai Ridge on the island of Kauai, brings a fresh modern attitude to the regional plantation house layout emblematic of the area.  Originally comprised of domestic spaces indiscriminately shoved under a single pyramidal roof form, our concept was to remove the congestion of the original house by pulling out the sleeping spaces and locating them in a new adjacent wing connected to the original building by a large screened porch that becomes the main social space for the house.  The covered porch, protected from both the harsh sun and pouring rain, provides an indoor/outdoor space to enjoy the glorious views of the nearby mountains and lush gardens in all weather conditions.

Simple but strong design elements like the suspended fireplace, exposed roof structure in the public areas and expansive open floor areas create a design vocabulary that speaks both to the plantation home typology and the 21st century desire for open spaces and layouts.
