The Kauai Mountain Home is the result of the clash of two seemingly disparate client driven inspirations meeting on the unique site and topography of the inland mountains of Kauai.  The desired a home that concurrently combined the ideas both “black modern” and “hippie experimental.”  This seemingly small overlap of the venn diagram  resulted in crisp modern floor plan with alternating indoor and outdoor rooms.  The interior spaces, outdoor lanais, and and floating bridges are all linked by a continuous undulating standing seam roof inspired by the series of deep valleys and sharp ridges seen from the house in the mountain range above.  The folds of the roof collect the abundant rain water (the site sits at the bottom of the rainiest mountain on earth) and expressively direct the water away from the house and into a series of man-made ponds that eventually drain into the adjacent stream.  The free floating roof system creates an opportunity to seamlessly melt between indoor and outdoor spaces as enclosure melts away as you get closer and closer to the garden ponds.
